Receiving Mail & Packages

For the safety and security of our students, mail and packages are not delivered directly to the residence halls or Greek houses.  All deliveries are made to the Ferguson Mail Center.  Two options are available for students to receive mail and packages:

Trackable Packages Only Option
All students are able to receive inbound UPS/FedEx/DHL items, as well as trackable items sent via the United States Postal Service without renting a mailbox.  Every student actively enrolled and taking classes at UA are automatically assigned a 6-digit “non-boxholder” mailstop code (MSC#).  This mailstop code (MSC#) is permanently-assigned and allows every student the opportunity to receive any trackable item at the mail center without renting a mailbox.  A student will not be able to receive letters, cards, magazines, newspapers, etc. with this option unless the item has a unique tracking number. Non-trackable items for students that do not have a mailbox rental are returned to the sender, as the student does not have a mail receptacle to receive the item. A “non-boxholder” mailstop code will always start with the last two digits of the year that the student became actively enrolled in classes at UA.  (i.e. if a student became actively enrolled in the year 2014, their permanently-assigned MSC # would begin with “14”.)  Students can find their mailstop code (MSC#) by clicking on the Ferguson Mail Center icon behind the Student tab on the myBama web portal.

All Mail and Packages Option (Best Option)
Students who wish to receive letters, cards, magazines, newspapers, etc. in addition to receiving trackable items must rent a mailbox.  When a student rents a mailbox, their 6-digit mailstop code temporarily changes for the duration of the mailbox rental to reflect the number of the mailbox the student has rented.  These mailstop codes will always begin with “871, 872, 873, 874, or 875”.  Students who choose to rent a mailbox are able to receive post office mail as well as any incoming UPS/FedEx items using the same address. Incoming mail and packages must be addressed with the student's unique 6 digit Mail Stop Code (MSC). Incoming mail (including items without a tracking number) addressed to a student without an active mailbox rental will be returned to the sender.  Mailboxes are rented on a "first-come, first served" basis and may be rented for various terms. Mailbox rental rates are as follows:

$60 per semester (Fall semester or Spring semester)

$120 per year (includes Fall, Spring, and Summer semester)

Advantages of Renting a Mailbox

The Ferguson Mail Center mailboxes are horizontal in shape rather than square to accommodate larger-sized mailpieces and helps to insure your mail is not bent or folded. Some of the benefits of renting a mailbox through the Ferguson Mail Center include extended hours and the convenience of having all your mail and packages delivered to one location.

Here is what else you receive with a mailbox rental through the Ferguson Mail Center:

One address for all your mail and packages - One address for receiving all of your items, regardless of carrier. Receive inbound mail and packages sent via the United States Postal Service, as well as items sent via UPS, FedEx, FedEx Ground, DHL, etc.

Package acceptance from all carriers - We accept mail and packages from all carriers, so you will never miss a delivery.

Notification you have mail or a package - Our system will send an e-mail notification to our official UA e-mail address anytime you have mail in your mailbox or when you have a package ready for pick-up.

Mail forwarding - Going home for the summer? No problem! You can have your mail and packages forwarded to your home address while you are away from UA. Students can submit a mail forward online by clicking on the Ferguson Mail Center icon behind the Student tab on the myBama web portal.

24-hour Access - Pick-up mail from your mailbox when it is convenient for you by using our 24-hour entrance.

Students Who Do Not Rent Mailboxes

Students who choose not to rent a mailbox must follow these guidelines for receiving packages:

Students who do not rent a mailbox will not be able to receive letters, cards, and small mail items sent via the United States Postal Service unless the item has a unique tracking number.

All students are able to receive inbound UPS/FedEx/DHL items, as well as trackable items sent via the United States Postal Service without renting a mailbox. Each student is automatically issued a unique 6-digit mailstop code (MSC#) by the Ferguson Mail Center when they become actively enrolled in classes held at the UA campus. The student's mailstop code (MSC#) must be included in the address on all incoming packages. Non-trackable items for students that do not have a mailbox rental are returned to the sender, as the student does not have a mail receptacle to receive the item.

What Address do I use to receive mail and packages?

Use the same address regardless of carrier. Use this address structure exactly:

STUDENT'S FULL NAME
MSC # __ __ __ __ __ __
1831 UNIVERSITY STATION
TUSCALOOSA, AL 35487

Use the student’s full name.  Many students have the same first and last name.

Use the correct MSC#.  This ensures items are routed to the correct student.  Students can access their unique MSC# by clicking here.

DO NOT address items to the student’s residence hall or to a University department.

Mail and Packages for Greek Housing

For safety and security reasons, students may not receive personal mail and packages at a Greek house.  All students are required to use their personal mailstop code (MSC#) for receiving mail/packages at either the Ferguson Mail Center or at the Tutwiler Package Center

All Greek houses use the same address format along with the 6-digit mailstop code (MSC#) assigned to the houseDO NOT USE THE PHYSICAL STREET ADDRESS FOR THE HOUSE.

NAME OF SORORITY/FRATERNITY
MSC# __ __ __ __ __ __
1831 UNIVERSITY STATION
TUSCALOOSA  AL  35487

Mailstop codes (MSC#) for Greek houses should only be used for the “business operations” of the house.  Personal mail and packages addressed to a student at a Greek house are held at the Ferguson Mail Center for a maximum of 5 days.  Unclaimed packages are returned to the sender.

Steps for UA On-campus Students Voting By Absentee Ballot

Many students living on campus are registered to vote outside of Tuscaloosa County. To assist students living on campus in voting by absentee ballot, students may have their ballot sent to the Ferguson Mail Center (even if the student has not rented a post office box) by following the steps found below:

1. Request an absentee ballot from your local election authority in the state in which you are registered. If you need assistance in requesting a ballot, you can use this Absentee Ballot Tool: https://www.vote.org/absentee-ballot/

2. Once your absentee request is approved by the local elections officer, the election office sends an absentee ballot to you. Please note that the ballot must be sent from an official elections official for it to be processed at the Ferguson Mail Center if you do not have a post office box. Mail not easily identifiable as official election materials will not be processed. If you elect to have your ballot sent to the Ferguson Mail Center, please use the following recipient address structure to ensure that your ballot is managed properly:

Your Full Name
Six-Digit MSC#
(All students are assigned a unique Mailstop Code (MSC), which is a six-digit number that allows you to receive any trackable item at the Ferguson Mail Center. You may locate your MSC number by clicking here.)
1831 University Station
Tuscaloosa, AL 35487

3. Once your absentee ballot is received by Campus Mail Service, you will receive an email notification at your Crimson Mail account. This email will notify you about where and how you may pick-up your absentee ballot.

4. To receive your absentee ballot from the Ferguson Mail Center, you must present your Action Card to the service counter attendant and provide your electronic signature for receipt of the ballot.

5. Once you have picked-up your absentee ballot, you then complete and return your voted absentee ballot to your election office by your State's specific deadline.

Shipping Outbound UPS and/or FedEx

The Ferguson Mail Center does not offer processing of personal outbound UPS and FedEx shipments at this time. However, as a courtesy, students, faculty, and staff who wish to ship personal UPS and FedEx packages may drop-off their prepaid shipments to a customer service associate at the Ferguson Mail Center.

Have questions about sending packages for Move-In?

Please call –

Tina Lee, Operations Supervisor

(205) 348-2766

Tommy Robertson, Operations Supervisor

(205) 348-2797

We understand that Move-In can be a very stressful and hectic time for both students and parents. It is our goal to help make Move-In a positive experience for everyone involved. We want each student and parent to take comfort in the knowledge that your mail and packages are handled safely and securely from receipt to delivery here at The University of Alabama.

In order to best serve our students, we are providing the following information:

Students may begin shipping packages to campus as early as June/July for Move-In in August. Don’t delay. The sooner your packages arrive, the sooner we can get them processed and ready for you to pick-up when you arrive on campus.

There is no limit on how many packages you can send prior to Move-In. However, we do respectfully ask that each student be resourceful and mindful of the volume of packages they send to campus for Move-In. Only ship the necessities. Many items can be purchased in Tuscaloosa or ordered online and shipped to the student after Move-In.

There are no size or weight restrictions implemented by Campus Mail Service. However, most carriers have size and weight limits for the services they provide. Check with your carrier prior to shipping. As for Campus Mail Service, if you can ship it with UPS, FedEx, or the US Postal Service, we will accept it.

We accept shipments from all major carriers, including UPS, FedEx Express, FedEx Ground, DHL, and the United States Postal Service. We do not accept freight shipments.

Use the same address regardless of carrier. Use this address structure exactly:

STUDENT'S FULL NAME
MSC # __ __ __ __ __ __
1831 UNIVERSITY STATION
TUSCALOOSA, AL 35487

Be sure to use the student’s full name. Many students have the same or similar first and last name. Use the student’s correct mailstop code (MSC#). This is extremely important to ensure items are routed to the correct student. Students can access their unique MSC# by clicking here.

IMPORTANT: Students who will be renting a mailbox should rent their mailbox prior to sending items to campus, as the student’s 6-digit mailstop code (MSC #) will change to reflect the number of the mailbox they have rented for the duration of the rental. If a student lets their mailbox rental expire, the student’s mailstop code (MSC#) reverts back to their permanently-assign mailstop code.

Use 1831 UNIVERSITY STATION as Address Line 1 and the student’s MSC# as Address Line 2 when placing online orders.

DO NOT address items to the student’s residence hall or to a University department. Campus Mail Service is not responsible for items that are misrouted or delivered incorrectly because of incorrect or missing address information.

Campus Mail Service’s internal tracking system will send an e-mail notification to the student’s official University of Alabama e-mail address as soon as a package is made “Ready for Pick-Up”. Detailed instructions are included in the e-mail. Students receive notification for each individual package that we receive. For safety and security reasons, we cannot confirm over the phone whether or not a package has been received at our mail center.

Campus Mail Service relaxes its package return policy during the Move-In period. Packages received at the Ferguson Mail Center prior to Move-In are not returned during the months of June, July and August. Campus Mail Service’s internal tracking system automatically sends out reminder e-mails to students who have not picked up their packages. Students should disregard these notifications and simply pickup their packages from the mail center when they arrive on campus.

During Move-In, the Ferguson Mail Center partners with the University’s Logistical Support staff to assist students with moving packages from the mail center to their residence hall. Once a student has signed for their packages at the mail center, students can make arrangements with the Logistics staff to have their packages delivered to their residence hall at their assigned Move-In time. Resources for this service are limited and should only be used by students who genuinely have a need.

As a courtesy, students may contact the mail center at campusmailservice@fa.ua.edu to notify us that you will be shipping packages for Move-In. By giving us your full name, MSC #, and Move-In information, the mail center team can properly stage your packages for pick up and expedite our processes on the day of your Move-In. Our preference is that you reply to your first package notification e-mail so that we can validate your information. Please attach this label to packages that you ship to the University of Alabama for Move-In. This label assists our mail center staff with the staging of your packages.

Please remember, packages are not delivered to your dorm room by Campus Mail Service. All students must come to the mail center to sign for their packages. Only the student can sign for their packages.

Once a student has signed for their packages at the mail center, students can make arrangements with the Logistics staff to have their packages delivered to their residence hall at their assigned Move-In time. Resources for this service are limited and should only be used by students who genuinely have a need.
